Callington Town LFC (5) Vs Hayle (2)

Following a three week break and an unbeaten start to the season, Callington were keen to get back to winning ways at Ginster's Marshfield Parc. The team got off to a bright start and found themselves two goals up after only ten minutes of play.
The first goal came from some uncharacteristic route-one football. A goal kick from Callington keeper Sara Rowe flew straight down the centre of the pitch to be met by Town striker Sarah Martin, who was quickest to react before slotting the ball home past the on-rushing Hayle keeper. Fellow striker Sasha Cameron then doubled the lead in similar fashion as she calmly side footed the ball into the far corner from the edge of the box. Hayle's tactic of playing a very high defensive line continued to bring about goal scoring opportunities for Callington, and on fifteen minutes winger Kate Bourn was denied a third goal for her team following a wonder save by the visiting keeper. Hayle then found themselves back in the game after midfielder Bianca Lincoln tapped home a rebounded effort from six yards. This was a wakeup call for the home side, who quickly regained their tempo to increase their lead once again. Their third goal game from Kate Bourn, who raced down the right wing and fired an unstoppable shot past the Hayle keeper. Callington then added a fourth when Martin closed down the last defender to nick the ball and finish off a real goal-poacher's move. Despite this, Hayle were determined not to roll over and Lincoln scored her second of the game to make the score 4-2 at half time.
The second half was a much scrappier affair with most of the play taking place inside a busy midfield area. Both sides created half chances but it was a long range strike from Town midfielder Katy Sheffield which brought about Callington's fifth goal. Her powerful shot cracked the cross-bar before taking an unfortunate deflection off the keeper resulting in the ball spilling into the back of the net.
Callington's player of the match went to Sarah Martin. Callington are playing away at St Breward next Sunday.

Marazion (0) v Callington (2)
Callington LFC have made a strong start to their first ever Division One season with a convincing 2 - 0 win away at Marazion. Callington started well displaying some fine passing football. Striker Sarah Martin and left midfielder Sam Veal both had chances, but couldn’t quite find the back of the net. The scoring finally opened on thirty minutes, after Town striker Anneleise Noakes held off three Marazion defenders to lay the ball back into the path of midfielder Katy Sheffield who lashed a fierce curling shot into the top corner from 20 yards out. Despite Callington having the lion’s share of possession, Marazion still looked dangerous on the break and managed to force a number of corners in the first half. Both sides battled hard to create chances, but neither keeper was truly tested until the second half. Callington Keeper, Sara Rowe, made a fine one handed save after a through ball from the Marazion midfield was latched onto by their pacey striker. Not to be outdone, the home side’s keeper then pulled off an athletic save - tipping the ball over the bar after a long range effort form Noakes. Both team’s continued to battle hard, but a brave header from Noakes sealed the victory for the visitors.
Callington are away in a local derby against Dobwalls this Sunday.

Last season (2009/2010):
Tuesday 13th April
Kimmins Cup - group stage
Callington (2) Vs Kilkhampton (0)
Callington managed to put their disappointing result and cup exit at the weekend to one side when they ran out winners at home to Kilkhampton on Tuesday evening. Despite missing a number of key players Callington had the greater share of possession for most of the match. Kilhampton were resolute in their defending and kept the home side at bay for over half an hour. The away keeper made good saves to deny Carla Knighton, Anneliese Noakes and Marie Wilson, who all came close to opening the scoring. It was ten minutes before the break that Callington finally got their goal when some good work out wide from striker Kate Bourn resulted in her bending a terrific shot into the far corner past the out-stretched arm of the keeper.
The second half saw more of the same pressure from the home side, but once again, Kilhampton defended well and battled hard in the midfield. A second goal almost came when a goal mouth scramble resulted in a number of blocked shots in the Kilhampton six yard box. Kilkhampton were relieved to see the ball eventually cannon off the post away to safety. However, Callington managed to seal the win 10 minutes from time when Anneliese Noakes brilliantly chipped the ball over the out-rushing keeper to score her first competitive goal of the season.
Sunday 11th April
St Austell Trophies Cup - semi final
St Agnes (1) Vs Callington (0)
In a game that always looked likely to be won by a single goal, it was the slightly superior physical strength and desire that took the home side through in the end. On an uneven playing surface both sides struggled to play flowing football. It was Callington who had the chance to take the initiative when on the 20th minute a penalty was awarded for a hand ball in the box. Up stepped Sam May, Callington's leading scorer, who saw her well struck penalty brilliantly saved by home keeper, Julie Windram. Both sides huffed and puffed in midfield but neither could create a clear opening to score.
The second half was much the same as the first, with lots of long balls and strong tackling. St Agnes then got the decisive goal when Tracie Burley, who was a thorn in the side of Callington's defence all day, broke through out wide to fire an unstoppable shot into the far top corner. With only 15 minutes remaining, Callington stepped up the pressure and pressed for an equaliser. The St Agnes back line held firm, but Kate Lewis came close to equalising when her low shot was saved by the feet of the home keeper. 10 minutes from time, the away side thought they had pulled a goal back when they finally had the in-form away keeper beaten. However, Jodie Shipton's brave header was cleared off the goal line by the defender who was on the back post. With Callington pressing hard for an equaliser, St Agnes almost doubled their lead. St Agnes would have made it two, but for an excellent save from young keeper Sara Rowe. She back pedalled well and leapt to save a long range strike that was creping just under the cross bar. St Agnes were then able to safely see out the remaining minutes of the game and progress through to the final.
Sunday 14th February
Kimmins Division 2 Cup
Callington (4) Vs Truro (1)
Sunday's game between the top two Division 2 sides lived up to expectations. Both teams went at it from kick off with some competitive tackles and fast paced football. The first 10 minutes saw a fierce midfield battle with neither side creating any clear openings. However, it was a Callington corner that provided the opportunity to open the scoring. After Katy Sheffield's corner was played back to her on the wing she brilliantly picked out fellow midfielder Jodie Shipton who remained in the away box to volley home from six yards. Five minutes later winger Sam Veale took advantage of a parried save and calmly lobbed the ball over the head of the Truro keeper to double the home side's scoreline. Truro continued to apply the pressure, and an attack from the visitors would have resulted in a goal had it not been for a dramatic goal line clearance by impressive home defender Kylie Booth. The away side's persistence eventually paid off though, when a great long range strike sawed into the top corner of the Callington net. After a finely balanced first half the teams went into the break at 2-1.
Truro started brightly in the second half with some slick passing football, but Callington defended well. Having seen out the expected surge in tempo from the away side, Callington then began to insert some pressure of their own. It was Town winger Kate Lewis whose persistence led to the all important third goal. Her low shot took a slight deflection which was enough to send the ball spinning beyond the out stretched arm of the Truro keeper. With Truro's morale seemingly dented, Callington grew in confidence. The final goal, which sealed victory for the home side, came 15 minutes from time when a Sheffield free kick was flicked on by substitute Anna Rowe to the predatory Sam May who lashed the ball home from four yards.
Callington Manager Adam McPherson said: "It was a good game between two good sides. There wasn't all that much between us, but we took our chances when we got them. We didn't perform particularly well in our last match so this was a good game for us to get back into the sort of form we were in a couple of months ago. We've got to build on this now and make sure we maintain this level of performance until the end of the season."
Sunday 1st November
Kimmins Division 2 Cup
Camelford (1) Vs Callington (11)

Callington made light work of a depleted Camelford side that had to play the game with ten players. Town raced into a seven nil half team lead thanks to a goal a piece from midfielders, Jodie Shipton and Katy Sheffield, sandwiched between five first half goals from Callington striker Sam May.
Camelford continued their impressive attitude and commitment towards the game in the second half, but could not stop Callington from adding to their tally. The second period saw further Callington goals from Natalie Rider, Sarah Martin and Sam Veale, who scored the pick of goals with an excellent 20 yard drive which sailed straight into the top corner of the Camelford net. Callington's eleventh came from an own goal which was a result of some good pressure from Town substitute Jude Beswetherick. Camelford did get a deserved consolation goal when one of their players scored an excellent 25 yard free kick.
Callington's player of the match was shared between Sam May for her clinical finishing and left winger Sam Veale for some consistently good crossing of the ball.
Sunday 25th October
Camelford (0) v Callington (7)

Callington continued their excellent run of form with another comfortable league victory over Camelford LFC. The visitors got off to a perfect start when only five minutes in Jodie Shipton drove a powerful shot into the bottom corner following a Sarah Martin through ball. The scoreline then remained locked for 35 minutes due to a drop in Callington tempo and some excellent work rate from the home side. The second goal was unfortunate for the battling Camelford side. A powerful corner by mid fielder Katy Sheffield was headed into the back of the net by their own defender just before half time. Camelford rallied well and began to apply some pressure, but a couple of good saves from Callington keeper Sara Rowe left the half time score at 2 0.
Callington came out for the second half with an improved impetus and began to step up the pressure on the home sides goal. It was 10 minutes into the second half that saw the third goal, when striker Kate Lewis drove a half volley into the roof of the net following a Sam Veale cross. Callingtons fourth came when Sheffield provided a typically pin point set piece before Jodie Shipton calmly brought the ball down with her left foot and smashed it hard and low beyond the keeper with her right. New signing Dawn Moore was next to get in the action after controlling the ball well in the six yard box then spinning and hitting a low effort beyond the keeper. It was Callington centre back Marie Wilson who was next to get on the score sheet when her long range effort bounced over the out bound keepers head and into the net. Lewis rounded off the win and maintained her position as the teams current leading goal scorer, by smashing in a close range effort from a Sarah Martin cross. Player of the match went to defender Kylie Booth for an accomplished performance in the heart of Callingtons defence.
Callington are back at Camelford for a cup meeting next Sunday.
Sunday 11th October - League Cup
St Blazey (0) v Callington (1)
Division two side Callington maintained their unbeaten start to the season with an impressive win over their division one opponents St Blazey. From the first whistle, Callington took the game to the home side with a barrage of attacks. With Callington midfielder Katy Sheffield, delivering over ten corners in the first period alone, the away side came close to opening the scoring on numerous occasions, but failed to break the deadlock due to some good defending and brave goalkeeping. Maintaining constant pressure on the home sides goal, Callington came close scoring on the half hour mark when a close range effort by striker Kate Lewis was pushed onto the post by an in-form Blazey keeper.
Going into the second half full of confidence, Callington continued to move the ball well on an excellent playing surface. Had the away sides finishing been better and Blazeys keeper not been found in such excellent form, Callington would have been well out of sight. Towns best chance to open the scoring came when a Jodie Shipton shot was handled on the line by a St Blazey defender. However, the resulting penalty was put over the bar. When it appeared that nothing would go in for the away side, a coming together between Sheffield and the Blazey keeper ended up with the ball falling kindly to Callington winger Sam Veale who confidently slotted home from six yards. After scoring the all important and illusive first goal, Callington could then comfortably see out the remainder of game and progress to the next round of the cup.
Callington are playing Kilkhampton at home next Sunday.
Sunday 20th September
Kilkhampton (1) v Callington (8)
Callington Town Ladies are still un-beaten this season after another convincing 8-1 win over league newcomers Kilkhampton. This latest win sees their goal difference rise to an impressive 18 over only three games.
The first 20 minutes saw numerous advances from the visiting team, but excellent goalkeeping kept the scoreline even. It was striker Sam May who broke the deadlock when a one-on-one situation resulted in May tucking the ball into the bottom corner. 10 minutes later May set up fellow strike partner Kate Lewis whose tremendous 25 yard drive from wide right sawed straight into the top corner. 5 minutes later Lewis repeated the move to score an almost exact replica. Just before half time Kilkampton answered back when a free kick was awarded for handball just outside the box. The home side s striker took her chance well firing past stand-in Callington keeper Jude Beswetherick. Callington s work rate was tireless in the second half, and some excellent passing football resulted in several more goals. Centre midfielder Jodie Shipton scored two, a brave header from a corner and a fantastic half volley from 30 yards; new signing Sam Veal scored her first for the club when her hard and low effort squirmed under the Kilkhampton keeper; May added to her season tally with a superb finish over the outbound keeper, and Kate Lewis tucked away a penalty to secure her hat-trick.
Town manager Adam McPherson added: "We went there with four players out, including our goalkeeper, so I am very proud of how we played and the attitude of the girls has been outstanding. Last season we might have gone to an away game like this with only eleven players and lost, but we've developed well so far this season."
Callington now have a two week break from competitive games, but are playing Tavistock in a friendly on Wednesday 30th September.
Sunday 13th September 2009
Callington (5) v Truro (1)
Callington LFC had another convincing home win this Sunday against new side Truro City Youth. Despite only being able to field nine players for most of the match, the visiting team gave a determined performance and their hard work made up for their missing players.
The first 15 minutes were fairly evenly contested with chances at both ends. It was a pinpoint cross from Katy Sheffield that was met by the head of striker Sam May that broke the deadlock. Ten minutes later Truro answered back when a good attacking move resulted in a clean finish from mid-fielder Chantelle Goldsworthy. Callington pressed hard to regain the lead. Then 10 minutes from half time a Sheffield corner was bravely met by Jodie Shipton who headed the ball home from six yards.
The second half saw a more resolute Callington side and Truro struggled to fight off numerous advances. With Ten minutes gone in second period, May ended a slick passing move by rolling the ball into the path off fellow strike partner Sheffield, who calmly hit the ball hard and low in to the bottom corner. Then on 60 minutes, winger Kate Lewis took the ball to the bye line and managed to squeeze it into the back of the net from the tightest of angles. Callington sealed the win when Sheffield completed her brace by scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by two Truro defenders.
Player of the match went to Callington midfielder Jodie Shipton for her tireless work rate and tackling in hot conditions.
Callington are away Kilkampton next Sunday.
Sunday 6th September
Callington (7) v Camelford (0)
Callington LFC started their season with a bang with a 7-0 victory over Camelford. The visiting team started brightly with some good link up play that un-nerved the Callington defence, but were un-able to take the lead due to a save from stand-in keeper Kate Bourn. The first twenty minutes of play was fairly evenly contested with chances at both ends but good defending all round. It was Callington striker Sam May that finally broke the dead lock when her 30 yard strike caught the away keeper off guard and bounced into the back of the net. Five minutes later May set up fellow strike partner Katy Sheffield who volleyed in a terrific strike from the edge of the area. Callington stepped up their domination for the later part of the first half, and a few minutes later the move of the match resulted in a Sheffield cross being fired home by debutant winger, Sarah Martin. The home side's first half scoring was completed when left winger Kate Lewis beat three players and saw her fierce cross catch the keeper unaware by squeezing in at the far post.
Callington continued their attacking play from the first whistle when a series of corners resulted in a cleared ball being whipped back in by corner taker Sheffield for Kate Bourn to cleanly head home from a couple of yards out. A string of chances then fell to Bourn who found a brave away keeper in good form. Persistent until the end, she eventually achieved her second after breaking through the away defence to slot the ball home from just inside the 18 yard box. Callington rounded off a great first game of the season when another of their debutants, Jodie Shipton, hit a 20 yard drive into the top corner. The player of the match was shared between Callington midfielders Kate Lewis and Carla Knighton.
Callington manager Adam McPherson said after the game: "To win by seven, keep a clean sheet and have six different scorers in a first league game of the season is excellent. It was also very satisfying to see all our new players settle in so quickly. Truro will be a good test but the girls can take a lot of confidence into that game."
Callington's next home match is against Truro City at home where they will look to build on their strong start to the season.
Sunday 16th August (friendly)
St Breward (3) v Callington Town (4)
Callington Town Ladies began their pre-season friendlies in good fashion with an away win over St Breward. Town got off to a blistering start against their division one opponents by racing into a two goal lead. It was one of Callington's best performing players of last season, Katy Sheffield, who did the early damage. Within five minutes, she fired an excellent low drive into the far corner of the away goal. Only moments after the re-start, she latched onto a Sam May flick on, to drive another excellent strike into the Breward net. Despite St Breward settling into the game and creating a few half chances of their own, Sheffield soon secured her hat-trick by taking advantage of some in-decision in the Breward box. St Breward still looked dangerous on the counter attack and it was their quick forwards who carved out two chances which were both confidently taken to make the score 3-2 at the half time interval.
The second half saw both teams continue to press for goals, but it was the home side who struck first to level the score. With Callington playing good passing football, they looked the more likely to strike next. With only five minutes to go, it was Town's top scorer of last season, Sam May, who poked the ball home from a yard out to win the game.
Callington handed debuts to new signings: Jodie Shipton, Sam Veale, Carla Knighton, Sarah Martin and Alexa Dobson.
Callington manager, Adam McPherson said after the game: "Considering that was our first pre-season game, I was really pleased with how the girls performed. I was especially pleased with our new signings who all had excellent games."
